The Nature of Nature
A photographic series of 713 4x5 film positives.
These photographs, made from 2014 through 2018, are my photographic responses to Paul Klee’s assignments to his students at the Bauhaus. In responding to his assignments, I limited myself to a 4x5 film camera and imposed a rule that all manipulation of the image had to be done in-camera. Some film sheets have been exposed as many as 30 times to create a single image. I reviewed each of the 3,900 pages of Klee’s pedagogic estate (1921-1931), including his and his students’ unpublished notes and letters that were available to me during a residency at the Zentrum Paul Klee in Bern, Switzerland.
